How Can YOU Publish A Book? We asked ourselves this very question when I first even considered to publish a book. Here are some insights that may help you to publish Your own book.
How Can YOU Publish A Book?
I have published several books and have helped other people to publish their own books in the past.
During this process I have learned that anyone can publish a book.
But, to be honest, it’s something that is harder to do then most people think.
At the same time, I have learned that publishing a book is one of the easiest things to do.
The Easy Part of Publishing a Book
Well, let’s start with the good news. It has become very easy to self-publish a book today.
It used to be that if you had a book that you wanted published you had to send it to several printing houses in the hope that one would pick it up and print it.
In the event that you wanted to self-publish your book, you could go to a local print shop and they would happily print it for you. But it would cost you quite a bit.
Nowadays, there are several places where you can self publish your book at a fraction of the cost.
The Hard Part of Publishing a Book
Now the hard part of self-publishing a book.
You have to wear a lot of hats in order to self-publish your book. You have to be an editor, a copywriter, graphic designer, a marketing guru, and a social media genius.
Not to say that you can’t hire people to do these jobs. But that could be costly and if you don’t have much money or the knowledge to do the above jobs your book could be written, published, available for the masses, yet no one will read it.
Steps to Self-Publish Your Book
Like I mentioned above, today there are a lot of places where you are able to finally self-publish your book.
- Write Your Book
- Edit Your Book
- Test Your Book
- Design The Book Cover
- Format Your Book
- Where To Self-Publish
- Publish Your Book
- Promote Your Book
Write Your Book
Believe it or not I personally think this is the hardest part. Putting pen to paper, and ideas floating in your head into some sort of physical reality is hard.
Not everyone is able to have the time or the inclination to actually sit down and write their book.
If you get as far as writing your book… Congratulations, you have gone further then most people.
Edit Your Book
Fixing grammar errors in your book would be the next step.
Read your book a few times and look for all those commas and periods thatt you might have missed.
If you know a teacher or two you can ask them to take a look.
There are tools like Grammarly that will let you know where the grammar errors are.
Ultimately you can hire someone to go thru your book and fix the errors.’
I would suggest using all 4 ways if at all possible.
Test Your Book
After your book has been edited and there are no errors (hopefully) have a friend or two read the book and give you an honest opinion. Be ready to accept a bad review.
Another ways is to sign up to a reading group on Facebook. You will read another authors book and critique it, and someone will read your book and give you their opinion.
Design the Book Cover
If you can design your own cover you will safe money in the process.
Now if you can’t you can go to places like Fiverr and find someone that will make one for you.
depending on where you wish to self-publish your book the size and requirements will vary greatly.
Where to Self Publish?
Like we mention above there are a lot of places where it is possible to finally publish your book.
- Lulu
- Draft2Digital
- Smashwords
- StreetLib
- IngramSpark
- XinXii
- Self-Publishing School
- Barnes and Noble Press
- PublishDrive
- Reedsy
- BookBaby
- Amazon KDP
This is only a short list of places to self-publish there are many more places.
Publish Your Book
Well if you have made it this far you can finally see the idea in your head become a reality.
Just a few tips…
- Order a copy to make sure the quality of the printing, and if there are any grammar errors that you might have missed. BEFORE you start promoting it and telling all your friends about it.
- Do not be discouraged by any errors you find. Better you finding it than a customer.
- If you give any away GENTLY ask for a review.
- Do not overprice the book. See what other similar books are being sold for.
Promote Your Book
Just like finding a place to self publish, finding a place to promote your new book has become much easier this days.
Social Media – Includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
Videos – You can make a small video about your new book and post it on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and others.
Friends and Family – They can help you spread the word about your new book.
Giveaways – Give the book to people that will enjoy the book and hopefully leave you a good review.
Website – This website ( Leo Garcia Books ) is a good example of a way to use it to promote your new book. A simple link to promote – i.e. YOUR-BOOK(.c0m) is easier to promote then the long link from a vendor.
Link From Other Websites – I’m an Amazon book seller and I post the books I sell on LGBookShelf.com – Of course I will list the books I have published there as well.
Go Old Fashioned – Believe it or not I use Postcards, Thank You Cards and Bookmarks to promote new books I have published. And, Yes!!! They Still work.
Email – If you have a mailing list you can use it to mention your latest book.
Honestly this list to promote your new book could go on and on. The ways to promote your new book will go as far as your imagination, time and budget.
Conclusion
Self-Publishing a book is much easier this days, yet also has many steps. And each step has many parts.
You have to wear a lot of hats in order to self-publish your book. You have to be an editor, a copywriter, graphic designer, a marketing guru, and a social media genius.
